Steve Carell to End Run as Michael Scott

While promoting the film 'Date Night' on a BBC radio program, Steve Carell was asked about his future as Michael Scott from 'The Office'. His response was blunt and telling of the future of the thursday night staple, "I don't think so. I think that will probably be my last year." Carell, who won a golden globe in 2006 for this role, is under contract through the end of the seventh season.

His exit from 'The Office' will signal the end of the show. I, for one, believe the show has gone stale. The best stuff came in seasons 2, 3, and 4. Don't get me wrong, the show is still worth a watch, but it is in no way the show it used to be. I'm not sure it has "jumped the shark" per se. But it is losing its appeal, and I think Carell recognizes that. Steve Carell's career will certainly be defined by the role of Michael Scott, but he is now a superstar in every sense of the word. His name on the marquee of an upcoming movie all but guarantees success. Why beat a dead horse? 'The Office' was great and Michael Scott: legendary. But it is time to move on to bigger and better things for Carell. He does not need 'The Office', and frankly nor does television. Let's put a fork in this one, it's done.
